NZ maternal composites were created over 30 years ago by leading Romney and Coopworth flock masters to improve the profitability of their sheep.

To the already established, hardy and consistent Romney was added the East Friesian for its increased prolificacy and extra milk and the Texel for its hardiness and improved meat yield.

These sheep have been specifically bred for profitability in a zero-subsidy world. IDEAL EWES FOR EASYDAM RAMS

EasyDam rams are already proving their worth on many different ewe breeds throughout the UK. Medium sized ewes able to keep their condition in harsh climates are proving a winner.

They suit all types of ewe but are particularly successful when used on 

Lleyns. 

We already know that EasyDam X Lleyns outperform the highest performing Lleyns available. More lambs that grow faster with better carcases are what you get. A noted benefit is in the higher fecundity (ability to get in lamb) as ewe lambs.

Romneys

EasyDams are already 50% NZ Romney. By using them on pure Romneys you immediately remove the ‘Wool Problems’ associated with that breed and will not have to shear twice a year. You will also have more lambs that finish quicker and have better carcases. A noted benefit is in the higher fecundity (ability to get in lamb) as ewe lambs. EasyDam rams are the obvious ram to optimise the natural hardiness and low labour requirements of the modern Romney. 

Aberfields.

EasyDam X Aberfield ewes are smaller and so considered more efficient. Consistent high lambing % and high meat yield in slaughter lambs add to profitability.

WARRANTY 1 

If any EasyDam Tup dies from natural causes before the end of his second service season after purchase, he will be replaced FOC and no questions asked. So, any ram bought in 2021 will be replaced FOC if he dies before 31 Dec 2022 from natural causes. * *This is subject to vaccinations against Clostridial diseases and Pasteurella being full up to date.

EasyDam Specific Maternal  Traits for the ideal minimum shepherding ewe.

• Teat placement.
• Clear patch under tail to minimise dags.
• Clean legs, and bare bellies.
• Correct Foot structure.
• Strong maternal bonding.
• Ewe lambs must get in lamb as lambs to go into adult flock.
• Ewe lambs must rear all lambs born. No twins fostered off.
• Ewe lambs must reach 60 Kgs by tupping as yearlings after rearing lambs to be allowed into adult flock.

EasyDam General Maternal Traits.

• Prolificacy. Our pure NZ Texels regularly scan at 190%-195%: Suffolks at 185%: EasyDams 190%-200%:
• Bigger Pelvis contributes to 60% of lambing ease. All NZ ewes of every breed have larger Pelvises than their UK equivalents.
• Wedge shape. Narrower and shallower at front and deeper and wider at rear.
• Upright pelvis makes for easier lambing. The more rounded gigot shape sought in the UK Texel type ewe results from the forward rotation of the pelvis, reducing the size of the aperture through which the lamb must be born.
• Vigour  of the ewe breed and of the lamb’s sire’s breed affects the birthing success or failure. A more vigorous lamb is less likely to be presented incorrectly.
• Udder structure, teat placement and mastitis reduction all are improved by careful selection and culling of susceptible maternal sire lines.
• Foot structure that makes foot trimming redundant.
• Wool. NZ farmers do not like unnaturally tight wool that cannot breathe and holds a high amount of suint (lanolin, proteins, and urea) which attract flies.
• Mature Size: For over 25 years tools for reducing or maintaining mature ewe size have been available within SIL evaluations. The nutritional cost of feeding a large ewe and the reduction in stocking rates far outweighs any increase in any final cull value.
• Maternal Recording. All our sheep are recorded for maternal traits including prolificacy, lamb survival, Growth and Adult size and all rams carry their own individual SIL Maternal Index.
