SELECTED NZ SUFFOLK TERMINAL TRAITS

Your NZ EasyRam Suffolk rams will sire lambs that will always finish quicker off grass and make you more PROFIT than their UK equivalents BECAUSE:

a) NZ stud farmers have deliberately bred sheep with Bigger Rumens to digest more grass and produce quicker growing sheep. The rumen is the engine and Grass is the “diesel” for sheep production.

b) NZ sheep are more Aggressive grazers than their UK equivalents. Maximum grass growth is achieved by intensive stocking and rotational grazing, which requires sheep to be densely stocked on a small area of grass for a short time and then moved to a fresh paddock. Aggressive grazing is key to sheep thriving under this management system.

c) NZ sheep are used to grazing in Large Groups. Superior performers are those that can perform in large mobs near other sheep. All NZ sheep have been run in exceptionally large groups for many decades. Kiwi farmers believe this ability to be more important than being reared in a hard environment.

d) Science. Kiwi ram breeders were the first adopters of scientific performance recording and so bred successive generations of sheep that outperformed the parents in terms of functionality and saleable meat, increasing their client’s bottom-line year on year.

e) Independent Trials: Rams selected for high growth rates and easy finishing off grass only diets unsurprisingly sire the best performing grass-fed lambs. The INZAC comparative trial run by Teagasc for the last 5 years at Athenry in Ireland proved conclusively that NZ Suffolk rams produce lambs that finish earlier and heavier and with similar slaughter grades to the Northern Hemisphere Suffolk sired lambs on a grass only feed system.

f) Conversion rates: This trial also showed that although NZ and Irish Suffolk ewes ate similar amounts of grass (2.2-2.4Kg DM/day) the NZ sired lambs had 244gr Live-weight for every Kg of DM intake of the mother as against the equivalent Irish Live-weight gain of 195gr/day.
