They have never been selected for bonny heads, bare skins or ultra-muscly back ends, nor are they bred as a by-product of a terminal breed as in the UK. Instead, they are selected for their economic efficiency both in terms of productivity and labour reduction.
If you want to run a flock of Texel X ewes then you should be using the NZ Texel to give you a flock of hardy easily managed maternal, who will outperform their UK cousins on every count, while producing lambs that ‘Look like Texels’ in the live market.

NZ TEXEL SELECTED MATERNAL TRAITS
- Prolificacy. Our pure NZ Texels regularly scan at 190%-195%. The GDF9 fertility gene is present in some of our Texels.
- Bigger Pelvis area contributes 60% of lambing ease. Our NZ Texels have larger Pelvises than their UK cousins making them ideal ewes for outdoor lambing.
- Upright Pelvis makes for easier lambing. The more rounded gigot shape sought in the UK Texel type ewe results from the forward rotation of the pelvis, reducing the size of the aperture through which the lamb must be born.
- Wedge shape. Finer shoulders and shallower brisket at front and deeper and wider at rear. No blocky heads short necks and thick shoulders causing hung lambs.
- Vigour of the ewe breed and of the lamb’s sire’s breed has a major affect on the birthing success or failure. A more vigorous lamb is less likely to be presented incorrectly.
- Good birth coats and thick skins are major contributors to the NZ Texel ability to improve lamb survivability.NZ Texel breeders have no time for peeling or thin skinned Texels.
- Survivability. Texel genetics has been introduced into many NZ flocks due to good birth coats, thick skins, and high levels of brown fat at birth combining to give improved lamb survivability.
- Moderate sized lambs for optimum lambing ease.
- Udder structure, teat placement and mastitis reduction all are improved by careful selection and culling of susceptible maternal sire lines.
- Reduced mastitis.
- Good Foot structure reduces footrot and scald and makes foot trimming redundant.
- Wool. NZ farmers do not like unnaturally tight wool that cannot breathe and holds a high amount of suint (lanolin, proteins and urea) which attract flies.
- Mature Size: For over 25 years tools for reducing or maintaining mature ewe size have been available within SIL evaluations. The nutritional cost of feeding a large ewe and the reduction in stocking rates far outweighs any increase in any final cull value.
- Maternal Recording. All our EasyRam NZ Texel sheep are recorded for maternal traits including prolificacy, lamb survival, Growth and Adult size and all rams carry their own individual SIL Maternal Index.
